Syclo Moves Task Tracker Mobile Solution to Production

Leading mobile solutions provider completes certification for SAP integration

Hoffman Estates, IL – September 15, 2006 – Syclo, a global leader in mobile software solutions, today announced that it has finalized and moved its SMART Task Tracker to production. This application joins Syclo's SMART product line and was developed by collaborating with a long-time customer in the oil industry to meet the company’s needs for rapidly retooling and refitting its refineries.

SMART Task Tracker was developed to help manage major overhauls, or turnarounds, of sites — whether they are refineries, offshore platforms or petrochemical complexes. These overhauls are big events involving up to 200,000 tasks. Contractors and technicians swarm about the facility as critical pieces of equipment are shut down, serviced and restarted. Because downtime costs money, keeping the turnaround time as short as possible is significant. The coordination of the whole turnaround on paper requires masses of signatures on innumerable pieces of paper and is prone to human error. Syclo and this worldwide energy company worked together closely to automate the process within an electronic, paper-free application: Task Tracker.

The system, which provides lists of prioritized tasks for workers armed with hand-held computers, works on intrinsically safe hand-held devices that are linked by a wireless network. The customer has recorded a marked change in safety and efficiency since deploying Task Tracker.

Further testing is ongoing, and the product will be refined after a full turnaround season has been completed in the fall of 2006.Syclo has worked with this customer on a number of mobile initiatives for asset management, including the automation of maintenance work orders and using RFID for improved asset tracking.

Task Tracker integrates data into multiple applications, including project management software and enterprise asset management (EAM) systems. For better management oversight, a desktop interface provides a full audit trail of each task, including status changes and signoffs, and delivers extensive reporting capability. The product, built on Syclo’s Agentry™ mobile development platform, is now available for other companies seeking to reduce the time and data collection needed to track vast amounts of concentrated activities.

“Task Tracker reports tasks in a way that allows managers to see how many steps are left, rather than just showing a percentage of work completed, which is an important feature that managers wanted,” said Richard Padula, president of Syclo. “Now, crews conducting the turnaround or retooling select from a ‘punch list’ of items that need to be repaired or replaced, and electronically transmit work requests to the EAM system so they can be sent automatically to a maintenance supervisor for assignment.”

Enforcing business and process rules was a major factor in the product design and was of top concern to the customer in the initial rollout. For example, supervisors and inspectors cannot sign off on a task if any punch-list items are open. And user rights, roles and responsibilities can be enforced so that the properly trained technicians are completing tasks.
