Mobile Solutions Provider Syclo Sponsors Aberdeen Report on
Convergence of Field Service and Asset Maintenance
Hoffman Estates, Ill. July 18, 2007 — Syclo, a leading developer of mobile software solutions, announced today the release of an Aberdeen Group report entitled, "The Convergence of Field Service and Asset Maintenance." This report, co-sponsored by Syclo, discusses the common strategies used by best-in-class maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) and field service organizations to achieve greater asset performance, higher employee productivity and lower operational costs.
According to the study, improved asset-related and technician-related information is a key driver to improving asset performance. Mobile technology is highlighted as one of the main enablers to gaining such information. “Ensuring that the proper information is available at the time and point of service, through deployment of mobile technology, is a key strategy best-in-class organizations are using to address service improvements,” wrote co-authors Micky Long, Research Director, Strategic Service management and Sumair Dutta, Research Analyst, Strategic Service Management. “Nearly ninety-two percent of best-in-class firms surveyed either have in place or plan to implement systems that will provide technician access to job orders, status, schematics and parts availability via mobile devices.”
The report further highlights the importance of such factors as systematic performance measurement, proactive asset monitoring, the use of RFID technology and the implementation of automatic scheduling processes for achieving best-in-class performance.
To compile the report, the Aberdeen Group examined the asset maintenance/service strategies, capabilities and related technologies of more than 175 companies surveyed this past May and June.
Columbia Gas Transmission, an operating company of NiSource, Inc., was one of the best-in-class companies featured in the report. The company operates one of North America’s largest underground natural gas storage systems and moves more than three billion cubic feet of natural gas a day through its 12,750 mile pipeline network. Columbia Gas Transmission, a Syclo customer, eliminated inefficient paper-based maintenance systems and implemented a mobile work manager solution that now provides a two-way data flow between its information system and field technicians.
Since implementing this mobile technology in 2001, Columbia Gas Transmission has experienced impressive results in its preventive maintenance and compliance reporting programs. In the area of compliance, for example, the company now saves 19-28 labor weeks per year thanks to mobile technology – and the time it takes the company to complete D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) audits has been reduced from a week to a few hours.
The Aberdeen Group report clearly illustrates that mobile technology allows companies to bridge the information gap by merging the best practices of the asset management and field service areas. Asset managers know that by delivering information to the point-of-performance, skilled technicians will be able to work more intelligently. Field service team managers, at the same time, understand that efficient scheduling delivers the right technician to the most important location, on schedule and at the lowest cost, to keep assets up and running.
The breakout sessions provided conference visitors with a wealth of information regarding how mobile technology is used in such diverse fields as stadium management, petrochemicals, health care and plant and manufacturing services. Syclo also highlighted upcoming enhancements to its leading-edge technology products, such as its limitless Agentry™ platform and SMART Mobile Suite product line. Additionally, several customers including the Maryland Stadium Authority, Beaumont Services, a large metropolitan Detroit hospital and the Texas-based Lower Colorado River Authority public utility — told their mobile technology deployment success stories.
“What we see is that shared information is a best practice for asset management and field services, and mobile technology promotes this convergence the Aberdeen report discusses,” said Rich Padula, Syclo’s president and CEO. “We also see that many companies are discovering that mobile technology, especially a combination of wireless work management tools and sophisticated scheduling products, helps them realize sustained operating savings and improved asset performance.”
